Public Works Amendment Issue 2 - PASSES
Ohio voters approved public works amendment Issue 2 on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
With nearly 91 percent of Election Day precincts reporting, Issue 2 was passing with 67.4 percent of the vote. There were 529,948 votes in favor of the measure, and 256,820 votes against.
The amendment will provide up to $2.5 billion in bonds over 10 years for infrastructure across the state.
Strong Ohio Communities Coalition (SOCC) spokesperson Sam Rossi celebrated the measure’s passage in a news release.
“We wish to thank Ohio voters for renewing the State Capital Improvement Program (SCIP) with today’s ‘yes’ vote, and we appreciate the Ohio General Assembly placing Issue 2 on the May ballot,” Rossi said.
“This is the fourth voter renewal of SCIP since it was first approved by voters in November 1987.Ohioans understand that our local roads and bridges and other basic infrastructure need ongoing improvement,” Rossi continued. “Our campaign was bolstered by strong bipartisan support from Ohio’s elected lawmakers and a broad non-partisan coalition that included leaders on behalf of business, labor, agriculture, transportation, public safety and local governments. Thanks to our coalition’s dedicated work across Ohio for the last few months, voters have once again said ‘yes’ to strengthening our local communities by creating jobs and improving local roads and bridges.”
The existing authority for SCIP would have expired in July without passage of Issue 2, according to SOCC.
“With Issue 2’s passage, the program has effectively been extended for the next decade. Issue 2 authorizes the state to issue general obligation bonds of up to $250 million a year over each of the next 10 years for basic local infrastructure improvements,” SOCC said. “Projects are limited to roads and bridges, wastewater treatment systems, solid waste disposal facilities, storm water and sanitary collection, storage and treatment facilities.”
Ohio Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Steve Stivers also issued a statement on Issue 2’s passage.
“The Ohio Chamber is pleased to see voters recognize the importance of modern, reliable infrastructure to Ohio’s quality of life and its economic outlook,” Stivers said. “With this vote, Ohioans have opted to invest in our state for years to come by approving funds that will repair roads, bridges, sewers, water lines and other vital public services in each of our unique counties. We look forward to witnessing the improvements that are made and the jobs that are created as a result of this crucial program’s extension.”
